Making Learning Fun

Castletown D-Day Centre plays host to school groups throughout the year, providing local children with a unique experience to get hands on with history of their county. Our museum encourages active learning, enabling children to learn through involvement and immersive experiences in addition to more traditional talks and guided tours.

Why visit the D-Day Centre

Castletown D-Day Centre is an authentic recreation of the busy wartime dockyard on the Isle of Portland, from which in 1944, thousands of American troops of the 5th US Corps and the US 1st infantry, embarked for Normandy, France. The museum is located on the site of the embarkation and provides a hands-on, multisensory learning expeirence that encourages visitors young and old to explore the history of D-Day through active engagement with the artefacts and stories of D-Day.

Curriculum

Our school group experiences are designed for learning at KS2 (age 9-11) and KS3 (age 11-14) and provide a rounded educational experience on the events of D-Day, using authentic artefacts and recreations to paint a picture of the the embarkation. Our tours can be tailored to suit your lesson pans and provide valuable learning opportunities for modules such as 'Challenges for Britain, Europe and the wider word, 1901-present' and 'Warfare and British Society'.

Bespoke tours

No tours of the D-Day Centre are the same. We like to work with the teachers to provide a bespoke learning experience that is designed to engage students and provide them with a history they can relate to; whether that's a focus on their local history or a more broad view of the impact of warfare on British society. Unlike traditional tours, the D-Day Centre ensures all students have the opportunity to climb inside vehicles, handle authentic artefacts and wear original equipment used on D-Day. Get in touch today to discuss how we can tailor a unique learning experience for your students.

Teaching space

Castletown D-Day Centre offers two distinctive teaching spaces for you to utilise during your visit. On the main museum floor, we can provide seating for up to 30 students within the recreation of a wartime dockyard, offering a truly unique classroom. Alternatively, our 1940s tearoom offers a more secluded space away from the immersive sounds and is fitted out with authentic chairs, tables and decor. This room is ideal for group activities or even as a break room during your visit.

In addition, the museum benefits from additional locations that can be utilised should they be required. In addition to a separate mezzanine, there are also opportunities to visit the beach and Castletown pier, where thousands of troops embarked on landing crafts on D-Day.
